Golf: Teams to compete in Ivy Championships

The men’s and women’s golf teams will head to the Ivy League Championship this weekend at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J. Both teams’ entire seasons have been preparation for this tournament, and the squads hope to win this weekend and qualify for the NCAA tournament.

Though the men's team was plagued with a rough winter and was not able to get outside before spring break, head coach Will Green said he is confident heading into this weekend’s tournament.

“You really can’t overestimate the value of having a course that is within walking distance from campus,” Green said. “We certainly have one of the best facilities in the Northeast.”

Without the hassle of having to travel hours to the course, as the Tigers have done for seven other tournaments this season, they will have an advantage over their competitors. Baltusrol has hosted 16 United States Golf Association national championships, including the U.S. Open seven times, and it is one of the top courses in the country.

The men’s team recently finished ninth at the Princeton Invitational, which was played on their home course, Springdale Golf Club, two weekends ago. Freshman Bernie D’Amato was the top Tiger of the weekend with a 7-over-par finish after three rounds, tying for 14th place. The Tigers competed at the Caves Valley Intercollegiate at Owings Mills, Md., last weekend.

The women finished seventh out of 14 teams at the Roar-EE Invitational last weekend in Suffern, N.Y. Junior Kate Scarpetta led the Tigers with a 9-over-par finish after two rounds, tying her for 11th place overall.

“The team on the whole struggled at Columbia, myself included, but I think that we can use that as something to chew on and drive us to play this weekend,” Scarpetta said. “We have nothing to lose and everything to prove.”

The women’s team has been focusing on scoring during practice and toning down their lifts to prepare for the tournament. This is their biggest tournament of the season and the team is hoping for a successful performance.

“I haven't strung together three solid rounds at Ivies in my career thus far,” Scarpetta said. “I don't want to be able to say that anymore.”
