In their final tournaments before next weekend’s Ivy League Championships, the men’s golf team finished second and the women’s team took seventh last weekend.
The men traveled to Yale’s Caves Valley Intercollegiate tournament outside of Baltimore ,competing in the two-round contest against five other Ivy League teams and two Atlantic 10 teams. Freshman Bernie D’Amato led the Tigers with a 9-over-par score, closely followed by sophomore Evan Harmeling’s 10-over and sophomore Patrick Wasserman’s 11-over. Senior Jake Skinner shot 14-over.
“It was really tough out there this weekend,” Harmeling said. “But we all hung in there really well. It was close coming down the stretch, and we easily could have won this weekend, and it’s always exciting to be in contention. All five of us played consistently, which is a great sign going into the Ivies. We beat Harvard and Yale, which feels great, and I’m really confident we’ll play well next week.”
Penn won the tournament, beating Princeton by five shots. Harvard and George Washington tied for third, five shots behind Princeton.
The women traveled to Columbia’s Roar-EE Invitational at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, N.Y., on Saturday, where they took on 14 other sides, including each Ivy team. Junior Kate Scarpetta led the Tigers with a score of nine-over par, which tied her for 11th place overall.
Freshman Anna Jang finished 17-over, sophomore Wonji Choi shot 18-over, and both senior Michelle Grilli and freshman Olivia Garard contributed 20-over scores on the day.
“I hit some really diaper-worthy shots and struggled to keep the ball on the planet for both rounds off of the tee,” Scarpetta said. “How I played was not pretty, but on a positive note, my blade — putter — seems to be working again, and I feel really confident over my putts. This week, I’m going to continue to work hard tightening my short game and devote some time and attention to my driver, looking forward to next weekend.”
Harvard won the women’s tournament with a clear lead of 10 shots over second-place Penn.
Both the men’s and women’s Ivy League championships are scheduled to take place this Friday, April 23, at the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.
“Baltusrol is a really great track that is going to test everyone on the greens,” Scarpetta said. “I think that our team certainly has the ability to get it done this weekend as long as everyone gets tough and focuses one shot at a time.”
