Crew: Three crews look to continue success over the weekend

This weekend, three of Princeton’s four crews will be looking to follow up universally strong season openers. However, none will be at the Tigers’ home, Lake Carnegie. The men’s heavyweight crew will compete against the Penn and Columbia in the Childs Cup in New York City. The women’s open crew will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to meet Cornell and Harvard in the Class of 1975 Cup. The women’s lightweight crew will head across the country to Redwood City, Calif., to race against Stanford and Wisconsin.

The men's heavyweight crew is coming off a strong home competition against Georgetown last weekend, in which the Tigers swept victory in every race. This momentum will be important this weekend as Princeton fights with Columbia and Penn to claim the country’s oldest collegiate rowing trophy, the Childs Cup. Last year, Princeton trailed nine seconds behind Columbia to take second place. However, the men have opened the season more strongly than they did a year ago. Saturday's race could be anyone’s.

The women’s open crew swept last weekend’s regatta against Columbia and Rutgers, poising the Tigers well for the Class of 1975 Cup against Cornell and Harvard. History is on Princeton’s side as it enters the weekend: Last year, the Tigers trumped the Big Red by more than 30 seconds to come out on top. The Harvard women, who compete under the name Radcliffe, came in second by seven seconds a year ago, but they edged out Princeton by less than a second in last May’s Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges Grand Finals. The Crimson will definitely be the Tigers’ stiffest competition this weekend.

The women’s lightweight crew will be riding the momentum of a strong season opener against Philadelphia University's open crew and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Though there will be no cup at stake this weekend, the races against Wisconsin and Stanford will still be challenging. In last year’s Windermere Classic, the Tigers edged out the Cardinal by only two seconds. Given its 2009 record, Wisconsin will prove to be an even more daunting opponent. Last season, the Badgers won both aforementioned competitions in addition to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Grand Finals and the EAWRC Grand Finals. The Redwood City races this week will prove to be both a challenge and an opportunity for Princeton.

The men’s lightweight crew, who came off its 16th consecutive regular-season victory last weekend against Georgetown and Columbia, will not be competing this weekend. However, it will return to Lake Carnegie on April 17 for the Platt Cup against Cornell and St. John’s.
