Crew: Men's lightweight, women's openweight attempt to finish undefeated

With the regular season quickly coming to an end, the men’s lightweight and women’s open crew teams are both looking to complete undefeated seasons this Saturday.

The No. 1 men’s lightweight team (7-0 overall, 3-0 Ivy League) will be hosting rivals No. 2 Harvard (8-0, 3-0) and No. 4 Yale (5-1-1, 3-1) in a showdown for the Goldthwait Cup. This will be the 85th annual competition for the Goldthwait Cup, which the Tigers have taken for the past two years.

The lightweight team is fresh off a win against Penn. The Tigers crossed the finish line 2.4 seconds in the lead to take the Wood-Hammond Cup last Saturday and are ready for another competitive race this weekend.

After completing its perfect Ivy League season last weekend, the No. 2 women’s open crew team (11-0, 7-0) will host No. 17 Tennessee (9-3) this Saturday. With a win against the Volunteers, this season would be Princeton women’s open crew’s 11th perfect season. The last team to complete a perfect regular season was the 2006 team, which won 14 regular-season races as well as the NCAA championship.

Last weekend, the women raced against Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania and Bucknell in the Class of 1984 regatta, beating all three teams with a time of 6:25.6 minutes and second-place Dartmouth coming in 15 seconds later.

The No. 9 men’s heavyweight team will also be hoping to end the season strong with a race against No. 3 Brown (4-0, 2-0) for the Content Cup on Carnegie Lake.

“Brown is currently the top-ranked program in the east. They are a strong team on all levels, and we are expecting to see some good racing in every event,” men’s heavyweight head coach Greg Hughes said.

Last weekend, the men raced against No. 8 Yale and No. 6 Cornell in the Carnegie Cup, coming in second place. The Bulldogs took first, with the Tigers trailing only 1.4 seconds behind.

The Tigers have been practicing hard this week and are looking forward to a tough race Saturday. “We know that Brown will be fast, and we will need to be prepared to race hard,” Hughes said.

The heavyweight men will be racing at 9:45 a.m., followed by the lightweight men at 11 a.m. and the open women at 11:15 a.m.
