Crew: Boats win big at home

The first varsity eight boat looks to be a strong contender this year, and it beat Georgetown’s first boat by more than 25 seconds, finishing the race in 5 minutes, 40.0 seconds.

 The Hoyas’ first boat finished second with a time of 6:05.3. In the next race, Princeton’s second varsity eight boat came in first at 5:55.1, followed by the third Tiger boat at 5:59.9 and the second Georgetown boat at 6:25.3.

The novice eight boat was involved in the closest finish of the day: It was able to squeak out an impressive victory in 5:50.3, beating Georgetown’s finish of 5:52.4.

The heavyweight team looks to continue its dominance when it heads to New York City next weekend to compete in the Childs Cup alongside Columbia and Penn.

The reigning national champion men’s lightweight crew also competed in the regatta at Lake Carnegie on Saturday.

 The No. 1 Tigers (3-0) maintained their momentum by winning their 16th-straight regular season race by beating both Georgetown and Columbia.

Princeton cruised to a first-place finish in the first varsity eight race in 5:46.9, followed by the No. 5 Hoyas at 5:50.7. No. 7 Columbia rounded out the race, finishing third with a time of 5:51.7.

The Princeton 1V has now won 15 consecutive regular season races.

The Tigers also won the next three races. The second varsity eight boat beat Columbia’s time of 6:03.2 in convincing fashion, finishing in 5:53.9. The Hoyas’ second boat finished in 6:13.0.

The Princeton A boat in the varsity four race finished the race in 6:54.7, barely beating the Princeton B boat, which finished with a time of 6:56.8.

The novice eight boat was also successful in its debut on Lake Carnegie, beating Georgetown’s time of 6:07.3 with a finish in 6:05.6. Columbia finished third with a time of 6:17.9.

The lightweight team will return to action at the Platt Cup on April 17 when it faces Cornell and St. John’s.

That race will begin a stretch of three consecutive weekends of competition, culminating in the Goldthwait and Vogel Cups, on May 1, against Yale and Harvard, respectively.

The No. 6 women’s open crew (4-0) also saw action on Saturday, sweeping a regatta against both Columbia and Rutgers.

After sweeping No. 5 Brown and No. 10 Ohio State in the season opener last weekend, the varsity eight continued its domination by winning all four of its races at Lake Carnegie.

The first varsity eight finished the race in 6:17.0, beating Columbia by more than 25 seconds, which finished in 6:42.8. Rutgers came in third with a time of 6:54.4.

The second varsity eight boat also beat Columbia handily, finishing in 6:26.0, compared to the Lions’ time of 6:35.3.

 Rutgers finished in third with a time of 7:01.6.

The varsity four boat also cruised to a victory over Columbia with a time of 7:25.3. Columbia’s A boat finished in 7:36.7, and its B boat finished in 7:54.5, while Rutgers finished in 8:12.7.

Finally, the third varsity eight boat came through with a win in 7:06.8, topping Columbia’s finish of 7:15.7.

The open women hope to continue their success next weekend when they travel to Cayuga Inlet in upstate New York to face Cornell and Harvard in the Class of 1975 Cup regatta.
