The women’s tennis team is proof that numbers aren’t everything. This past weekend, No. 45 Princeton was matched up against No. 28 Marshall. The Tigers’ record of 8-4 was good, but not as good as Marshall’s unbeaten 11-0. If they had lost to an opponent like Marshall, it would not have come as a major surprise. But, again, numbers aren’t everything — and the Tigers gave Marshall its first defeat of the season with a solid 5-2 victory this past Sunday.
Senior Melissa Saiontz, sophomore Rachel Saiontz, junior Blakely Ashley and junior Taylor Marable all contributed key wins in the match against Marshall.
On the weekend of Feb. 27–28, Princeton traveled to Minnesota and split the weekend, recording a 5-2 win against No. 55 Minnesota and a 4-3 loss against Iowa before returning home for the win against Marshall and another 5-2 win against No. 59 William & Mary.
“In our last two matches, we have come together as a team and competed hard across our lineup,” said Ashley, who recorded a key doubles win in the Marshall match. “Last weekend, we beat No. 28-ranked and undefeated Marshall, which shows that everyone is playing well. We are looking forward to defending our Ivy League title.”
The Tigers are currently ranked 45th, with an overall record of 9-4. Their next matches are against the College of Charleston and North Carolina State over spring break.
The men’s tennis team (3-6 overall) capped off its weekend with a 4-3 win against Radford. The key tiebreaker match was a doubles match, won by sophomore Coleman Crutchfield and junior Alex Faust. Despite having recorded three close losses over the past two weekends — a 5-2 loss to No. 44 Northwestern, a 4-3 loss to Stony Brook and a 4-3 loss to Binghamton — the Tigers remain optimistic about how the rest of their season will progress and are looking forward to traveling to Florida to play over spring break.
“Considering that the team has suffered some injuries, I have an optimistic outlook for the team,” said Crutchfield. “We have a trip to Florida over spring break where we will play some highly ranked national teams, and I think that our team can fully come together over this trip in preparation for Ivy season."
The team's coming spring-break matches are against South Florida and Central Florida.
