Softball: Golden State slate includes eight foes

The softball team heads to the Golden State this weekend to play a series of games in northern California. The Tigers (1-5) will play a variety of teams from California, including Fresno State, Pacific, San Jose State, Santa Clara and Stanford. Princeton is playing in both the South Bay Super Series tournament and the Stanford Tournament.

With a full schedule, senior pitcher Jamie Lettire noted that it will be a challenging week but will definitely help in the end.

Last year, Princeton did not play in the South Bay Super Series tournament but did participate in the Stanford Tournament.

Winthrop — the team the Tigers beat in the Stanford Tournament last year — is not playing in the tournament this year.

Princeton also played San Jose in a non-tournament doubleheader last year and defeated the Spartans 4-0 in the opening game.

Princeton lost to Stanford by only one run last year. The rematch will presumably be close, though Stanford has played significantly more games at this point in the season, posting a 15-3 record.

“Regardless of the number of games Stanford has already played, we always want to go out and beat everyone we should beat and play a good game,” Lettire said. “We look to go in and play hard, and play solely who we are playing.”

Last weekend the Tigers played five games against Mount St. Mary’s, Maryland and Towson. Princeton lost to Mount St. Mary’s, 4-5, in its first game of the series, but won 6-1 in the second game. The Tigers also lost the other three games they played last weekend.

This weekend, the pitching staff will be headed by the freshman pair of Alex Peyton and Liza Kuhn. Freshmen make up almost half of Princeton’s team this year and the trip out West will be a chance for them to gain some valuable experience. Kuhn allowed four runs in her first two games and kept her run level low the remainder of the weekend. Freshman outfielder Lizzy Pierce also scored two runs last weekend.

“The freshmen came in ready to play and do not play the roles of freshman ... They have been great,” Lettire said. “Peyton and Kuhn will be vital this week, especially with the number of games we will be playing.”

Three players to look out for this weekend are junior catcher and third baseman Megan Weidrick, who posted three RBI as well as one run during the last weekend of games. Senior outfielder Kelsey Quist also had an impressive weekend with six RBI and three runs.

Sophomore outfielder Nicole Ontiveros also performed well last weekend, scoring five runs.
