Since arriving at princeton, senior outside hitter Carl Hamming has been a vital member of the men’s volleyball program. The tallest member of the team — at 6 feet, 7 inches — Hamming possesses enormous strength and power on the court. He has hit his stride recently, achieving double-digit kills in every contest since the team returned from Intersession.
Q: What was your “welcome to college” moment?
A: Meeting my roommate for the first time and learning that he teaches himself foreign languages for fun. I am still searching for the fun part of that.
Q: What is the greatest highlight of your sports career?
A: My freshman year, we went to the [Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association] Final Four. Even though we lost to Penn State, it was awesome because we got T-shirts and lots of free snacks. Or, during my sophomore year, we upset No. 11 George Mason on a Saturday afternoon, and that night was ’80s night at TI.
Q: Who’s your quirkiest teammate?
A: [Sophomore libero] Dexter Scobee. Because his name is Dexter Scobee.
Q: What’s the best part about being an athlete on campus?
A: Because most volleyball players are pretty tall, when we wear our general-issue Princeton Athletics gear, people assume we play basketball.
Q: What’s the worst part about being an athlete on campus?
A: Having to repeatedly inform people that Princeton has a varsity men’s volleyball program.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to do when not practicing?

A: Swim in Lake Carnegie or hunt squirrels on campus.
Q: What do you like most about volleyball?
A: We get to play in Dillon Gymnasium. Otherwise, we would play in Jadwin and struggle to get more than three fans to attend any of our matches.
Q: Who gets the most girls on the team? Who has the best game off the court?
A: Probably Johnny Mo [junior setter John Morris]. He’s the only volleyball player I have ever witnessed maintain perfect hair throughout an entire match. But there is a large contingency of teenie-bops that show up at our matches to watch Justin Bieber or Schwags [freshman outside hitter Pat Schwagler].
