Wrestling: Grapplers defeat Duquesne 29-9, fall to Virginia and Clarion

The new blood on the team was a major factor, as freshmen and sophomores were responsible for 21 of the team’s 29 points.

Friday started off well, with freshman 125-pounder Garrett Frey pinning his opponent in 4:59 for an early lead and his 18th win on the season, leading the entire squad.

The second match was a victorious comeback for sophomore 133-pounder Tony Comunale. Competing for the first time in over a year after being slowed by a slew of injuries, Comunale managed to win his match, 5-4.

Next, freshman 141-pounder Luis Ramos received a decision with a 5-2 score for his 10th win of the season. Duquesne finally got on the board with three points after sophomore Daniel Kolodzik’s tough 6-1 loss at 149 pounds, but the Princeton men came roaring back.

Major decisions earned by senior 157-pounder Danny Scotton and junior 174-pounder Travis Erdman and a decision from sophomore 165-pounder Andy Lowy decided the meet in Princeton’s favor.

Sophomore 184-pounder Kurt Brendel and freshman 197-pounder Charles Fox earned the Tigers’ last six points, while Duquesne’s Nadeem Farah closed the meet with a quick pin of freshman heavyweight Bobby Grogan to bring the final score to 29-9.

Saturday’s meet proved to be a much taller task for the Tigers, who were thoroughly outmatched by a Virginia squad that included four of the nation’s top 20 wrestlers.

A few Princeton wrestlers, including Frey and Ramos, managed to keep their fights close, but the team was unable to pull out any victories for the meet.

The Tigers fared slightly better against Clarion, finishing the meet with two wins.

Frey is the proud owner of a team-best 19 wins on the season after a 7-2 decision, and Erdman’s 4-0 decision win helped bring the Tigers’ total to 6 points for the meet.

Despite Saturday’s struggles, the Princeton men are still in a position to have one of their best seasons in a decade.

Friday’s win over Duquesne was their fourth win against a Division I school, the first time the team has achieved that feat since the 2002-03 season.

With some of its most difficult meets in the past, the squad has proven that it is ready for the Ivy League meets on the horizon.

The Tigers will head to Boston this Friday for their next meet against Boston University. The next day, they will face Harvard and Brown before facing Sacred Heart on Sunday.
