On Jan. 30, the men’s and women’s track teams traveled to the New York Road Runners at the Armory II. The men competed against 11 schools, including Columbia, Cornell and Villanova. The women competed against seven schools. The men won their competition with 126 points, while Cornell grabbed second place with 109.5 points. The women placed third in theirs, finishing behind Cornell and Virginia.
The men took first place in five out of 17 events, including the 400-meter dash, 4x400 medley relay, 1000-meter run, 500-meter dash and high jump. The Tigers also took second place finishes in the 3000-meter run, high jump and pole vault, and third place in the mile, 3000-meter run and shot put.
Sophomore Austin Hollimon took the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.65 seconds, a personal best which beats the NCAA Provisional Qualifying time. Hollimon also raced in the 4x400 medley relay to help the team take first place, beating the NCAA provisional mark again.
Two other members of the 4x400 medley team, freshman Russell Dinkins and junior Mike Eddy, took the first- and second-place spots, respectively, in the 500-meter dash. Men’s head coach Fred Samara said that Dinkins’ new school record for the 500-meter, at a time of 1:01.7, was “unbelievable.”
Junior Kyle Soloff ran the 1000-meter in 2:27.40, taking first place and beating second place Alex Bennatan of UConn by more than a second.
Senior Justin Frick took first place in the high jump by clearing 2.16 meters, which is over the NCAA provisional height, and senior Ian Fox took second.
“It was a tremendous team meet for us, as we beat a number of nationally rated teams,” Samara said.
The women’s team grabbed third place out of eight teams at the Road Runners meet with 94.5 points, while Cornell won the meet with 162 points. Virginia took second with 114 points.
The women won the long jump and pole vault, took second in the 60-meter dash and third in the weight throw and shot put.
Junior Tiffany Liu’s first-place long jump was 5.59 meters, which is her personal best. Freshman Tory Worthen won the pole vault with a 4.00-meter jump, which beats the NCAA provisional height. Juniors Emma Ruggiero and Thanithia Billings took third in the weight throw and shot put, respectively. Sophomore Eileen Moran ran for second place in the 60-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash.
“In all, we took away some encouraging performances,” women’s head coach Peter Farrell said. “Next, we’ll send some to Penn State, some to the New York City New Balance Games in the Armory and some will rest in preparation for the [meet against Harvard and Yale] at home on Feb. 13.”
Two members of the women’s track team, senior Reilly Kiernan and junior Sarah Cummings, traveled to Seattle, Wash., for the University of Washington Invitational while the rest of the team was in New York. They competed in the 5000-meter run to try to qualify for the NCAA tournament. Kiernan is a former associate editor for news for The Daily Princetonian.

Kiernan took third place in the event with a time of 16:19.14, which is both a personal best and above the NCAA Provisional Qualifying time. Cummings took fifth place with a time of 17:04.92.
On Jan. 23, the previous Saturday, the men won seven events at the Princeton Relays: the long jump, pole vault, high jump, mile, 60-meter dash and 800- and 1000-meter runs. Junior Dion Lehman met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying distance in the long jump, jumping 7.38 meters. The women took six events: the weight throw, high jump, pole vault, mile, 1000-meter run and distance medley relay.
The men’s team competes next weekend at Penn State, while the women will be split between joining the men at Penn State, returning to the Armory II and resting for the meet against Harvard and Yale.
“The team is slowly coming together at the right time, and the meet this coming weekend at Penn State should be a real test for us as we begin to put the entire team together for the run at the league title,” Samara said.
