The James Madison Medal is presented annually by the University to a Graduate School alumnus with a distinguished career that has either advanced the cause of graduate education or displayed an outstanding record of public service.
Petraeus is currently the commander of U.S. Central Command, and he previously served as the commanding general in Iraq from January 2007 through September 2008. Last spring, he spoke at the University’s Baccalaureate ceremony.
The Woodrow Wilson Award, which will be awarded to Leach, is given annually to an undergraduate alumnus whose career embodies Wilson’s famous unofficial motto for Princeton, “Princeton in the Nation’s Service.”
Leach, a Republican, served in Congress from 1977 to 2007 and is currently the chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
