Track & Field: Men and women get ready in final NCAA tuneup

Junior Joel Karacozoff and sophomore George Abyad will lead the men into the championship weekend when they compete in the discus throw, which is set to start at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Both have already qualified for the NCAA East Regional but aim to improve in preparation for NCAAs. Karacazoff will enter the meet with a personal-best throw of 47.72 meters, while Abyad comes in with a personal best of 51.93 meters.

In the 5,000m run, the Orange and Black will also send a strong squad of five Princeton runners, each of whom have already qualified for the East Regional. Senior Cameron Marantz leads the Tigers this season with a best time of 14 minutes, 28.63 seconds in the event. He is joined by junior Ted Price and a strong trio of freshmen in Donn Cabral, Brian Leung and Joe Stilin.

The Tigers will field a formidable contingent for the hammer throw Saturday morning, sending out Karacozoff, senior Alex Pessala and sophomore Craig Pearce. Each has already qualified for the East Regionals, and Pessala also said he hopes to improve on the 69.06-meter Princeton record he set earlier this season.

Later that morning, the Tigers will compete in the 4x100m relay and 1,500m run. Junior Chad Faulkner and freshmen Dave Slovenski and Derek Hynes will compete in the pole vault, with Slovenski leading the way with a 5.15-meter vault earlier this season.

The hurdlers are led by senior Chris Vasich, who has qualified in the 110m hurdles and will compete late Saturday morning. Senior Ian Thomson and junior Tom Zozokos will compete in the 400m hurdles in the early afternoon.

Freshman Austin Hollimon, the winner of the 200m dash at the Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships last weekend, seeks to continue his winning ways in the 200m and 400m dashes. Sophomore Mike Eddy, the winner of the 400m dash at Heps, will also compete in the IC4A 400m dash.

The women come into the weekend off their incredible team victory last weekend at Heps and look to continue their winning ways. The team has already qualified athletes in 13 events, and it hopes to add more at the ECAC meet.

Sophomores Liz Deir and Ashley Higginson, who have both already qualified for the East Regionals, will lead the Tigers in the steeplechase Friday evening. Higginson, senior Jolee VanLeuven, juniors Alexa Glencer and Reilly Kiernan, and freshman Alex Banfich will compete in the 5,000m event. Banfich currently holds this season’s top time at 16:23.24, and along with Banfich, Kiernan and Higginson, she has qualified for the East Regionals. Kiernan, who is also an associate editor for news for The Daily Princetonian, will also compete in the 10,000m run, the final event for the Tigers on Friday.

After the IC4A and ECAC meets, the teams will continue preparing for the East Regionals, which will be held May 29 and May 30.
