Rowing at home on Lake Carnegie, the men’s heavyweights will take on Brown in the annual Content Cup on Saturday. The Bears beat the Tigers in last year’s edition of the race, and Princeton will be looking to reclaim the prize for the first time since 2006.
Princeton and Brown have not faced each other one-on-one this season, but Brown has controlled the matchup over the last two years, after the Tigers took possession of the Content Cup from 2004 to 2006.
So far this year, the Bears have had a mixed season, beating rivals Dartmouth and Yale while falling to Harvard. In April, both Princeton and Brown raced in the San Diego Crew Classic, where the Tigers claimed sixth and the Bears took fifth.
The Tigers also fell to Harvard in addition to losing to Yale. Princeton and Dartmouth have not raced each other this year.
Also on Saturday, the women’s open crew will be taking on the rest of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro League in the Metro Cup on Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The Tigers did not row in this race last year, which Bucknell won. The Bison were followed by Rhode Island, who will also be at Saturday’s race.
On April 11, the Tigers outpaced the Bison, Cornell and Harvard on Lake Carnegie to win the Class of 1975 Cup. Bucknell is the only crew the Tigers will be racing Sunday that Princeton has faced off against this year.
The rest of the field includes Buffalo, Colgate, Delaware, George Washington, Holy Cross, Marist, the University of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Rutgers, Temple and Villanova.
As always, the weather will be a serious factor. Saturday’s forecast calls for rain and winds in central New Jersey — never ideal conditions for a race.
Not resting on its No. 1 national ranking, the men’s lightweight team is preparing for the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Sprints in Worcester, Mass., on May 10. The team is currently undefeated and will look to preserve its unblemished record.
The women’s lightweights are off until May 17, when they will race in the EAWRC Sprints on the Cooper River. Coming off of a tough loss to Harvard last weekend, the No. 2 Tigers are preparing to try and bounce back in two weeks.
