All 14 of Edwards’ points came in the second half, as Princeton turned a 34-21 halftime deficit into a 12-point win. With the Tigers down six with seven minutes, 33 seconds remaining in the game, Edwards hit two free throws to spark a 13-0 Princeton run that spanned five-and-a-half minutes and included two crucial layups from Edwards.
Edwards was a Division IV first-team all-state player her junior year of high school and led the Brentwood School to league championships in her freshman and senior years.
Win hat trick nabs Kalemba ECAC honor
After leading the Tigers to a four-game win streak, junior goaltender Zane Kalemba of the men’s hockey team was named ECAC Goalie of the Week this Monday. Kalemba’s 0.83 goals-against average is the second best in the nation, as is his 0.965 save percentage. Kalemba’s .916 save percentage and 2.38 goals-against average last year were the best in Princeton history.
Kalemba had a career-high 37 saves in the sixth shutout of his career, a 2-0 win over Quinnipiac. Kalemba then went on to record 16 and 28 saves against Rensselaer and Union, respectively, allowing only one goal in each 4-1 Princeton victory. Kalemba earned two ECAC Goalie of the Weeks awards last year and was also named the 2008 ECAC Hockey tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, with three shutouts in the five-game tournament and a 1.0 goals-against average.
Precocity takes the day
Freshman guard Doug Davis of the men’s basketball team set a new record for scoring by a freshman in a debut game, pouring in 25 points in Princeton’s season opener against Central Michigan. His prodigious output earned him Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors and was the most points by any Tiger in his debut since Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medalist Bill Bradley’s 28-point inauguration as a sophomore in 1962.
In the 55-53 loss to Central Michigan, Davis put away six points in the last 49 seconds, nearly closing an 11-point deficit and making it a one-point game with 30 seconds to go. Davis went four for nine from beyond the arc and finished 10 for 21 overall.
A graduate of The Hun School of Princeton, Davis led the way to a victory at the New Jersey Prep “A” state championship in 2007. Davis accumulated more than 1,000 points in his high school career and was also part of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association championship team during his junior year at Prep Charter in Philadelphia.
