Freshman midfielder Alissa Boddie spent most of the women’s soccer team’s first 14 games adjusting to the faster pace and more physical defense of collegiate competition. Last Saturday, however, Boddie was the one forcing others to adjust to her. In the Tigers’ 4-0 romp of Cornell, Boddie scored a hat trick and assisted on Princeton’s final goal of the day.
Boddie’s seven-point day netted her the Ivy League Player of the Week award as well as Rookie of the Week honors. Her weekend efforts came when Princeton needed a player to step up the most. The Tigers currently have a 4-1-1 record in the Ancient Eight, putting them in good position heading into their season finale against Penn on Saturday, Nov. 8. The game will take place at Roberts Stadium at 4 p.m.
Another stellar rookie claims Ivy honors
Freshman attack Kathleen Sharkey of the field hockey team won her second Ivy League Rookie of the Week award for her big performance in two weekend games. In Princeton’s 4-0 win over Cornell, Sharkey notched two assists, helping the Tigers secure at least a spot in a play-in game to the NCAA tournament and a share of the Ivy League title. She capped off her weekend efforts by scoring a goal in Princeton’s 5-2 win over No. 19 American.
Also garnering honors for Princeton was standout sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer King, who was named to the Ivy League Honor Roll. King currently possesses a perfect 7-0 record and has a 0.57 goals-against average for the season. The 4-0 win against the Big Red was her fourth shutout of the season. Sharkey’s offensive efforts and King’s job in goal helped Princeton jump to No. 8 in the most recent rankings. King, Sharkey and the rest of the Tigers will cap off their regular season against Penn on Friday at 5 p.m.
Magnowski earns ECAC nod
Men’s hockey junior forward Mark Magnowski collected the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week award after he helped the No. 9 Tigers win their season debut against Brown on Friday night, 4-1. Magnowski found the back of the net two times and also notched an assist. He didn’t stop there, however. In Princeton’s convincing 8-2 exhibition victory over the Ontario Institute of Technology, he netted two assists. Magnowski and the Tigers will face off at home against No. 17 Cornell at 4 p.m. Friday, a game that will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
Coming up this weekend
Along with the men’s hockey team’s nationally televised game, the football team will play under the lights against Penn on Friday evening. The game will take place at 7 p.m. at Princeton Stadium and will be televised on ESPNU. The matchup also marks a piece of Ivy League history as the 100th meeting between the Tigers and the Quakers.
