Tennis: McHale knocks off top seed, makes ITA semis

Emerging from a singles field of 116 players was freshman Lauren McHale, one of the Tigers’ highly prized recruits. McHale, the 16th seed, managed to knock off the top seed in the tournament, though she lost to eventual champion Ragini Acharya of William & Mary in the semifinals. In her match against top-seeded Kellie Schmitt of Marshall, McHale showed tremendous resiliency as she rebounded quickly from a 0-6 first-set drubbing to win the match 0-6, 6-1, 6-2.

“It felt awesome,” McHale said of the comeback. “I had a slow start but quickly realized that I could turn things around. I just kept fighting and knew I could break her and take the win. Although it took a very quick first set to find her weaknesses, I quickly adjusted and jumped on it. From then on, everything fell into place, and I eventually beat the top seed.”

In doubles play, McHale combined with fellow freshman Rachel Saiontz to qualify for the main doubles draw, where they managed to make it to the third round of the tournament. Sophomore Taylor Marable and freshman Hilary Bartlett managed to advance to the semifinal round of the doubles draw, where they fell to the Old Dominion team of Charleen Haarhoff and Nadine Fahoum, 8-3. Haarhoff and Fahoum went on to win the event.

This ITA event was another opportunity for Princeton to refine its skills before the teams’ regular season, which begins Jan. 28. Before squaring off at home against Temple, the team will also have the Duke-UNC Invitational tournament from Nov. 7-9.

In a deep and tough field, Princeton’s competitors held their own, and the team has shown some definite promise for the upcoming season.
