The fall season has certainly favored Princeton this year. The Tigers both as individuals and teams have done the University proud, capturing four Ivy League titles and bringing excitement to the playing field, the cross country course and the gymnasium.
Some squads came into the year as favorites. The field hockey team had captured 13 of the past 14 Ivy League crowns and surprised no one by winning the title this season, its only losses coming to top-five programs. Freshman Katie Reinprecht earned the Ivy League Player of the Year award in her first season, while her senior sister Sarah was named to the All-Ivy first team for the third time in her distinguished career.
Other squads faced the daunting prospect of replacing the irreplaceable: The women’s soccer team graduated perennial All-Ivy scorer and Canadian national team member Diana Matheson ’08. The Tigers emerged stronger than ever in the wake of Matheson’s departure, however, seizing the league title with an airtight defense that shut out half of its opponents.
Streaks were broken — both good and bad — and new ones begun. The men’s water polo team, which had not defeated Navy in the two squads’ last 10 meetings, emerged victorious, 7-3, from its Sept. 27 game against the Midshipmen. Princeton beat Navy again to take the Southerns title in a thrilling 12-11 contest.
The women’s volleyball team returned from a perfect Ivy season in 2007 to defend its title and winning streak this season. Though the Tigers fell to Yale, they also earned five All-Ivy nods, including three senior honorees.
As a whole, Princeton’s fall athletes garnered 25 spots on All-Ivy first teams, 13 second-team honors and eight honorable mentions.
