On tap with ... senior middle blocker Lindsey Ensign

Q: What has been the greatest highlight in your sports career?

A: Best moment would have to be last year at our last Ivy League game against Penn. We won, becoming undefeated Ivy League champions, and we were lucky enough to have all of our friends make it down to Philly to watch the game. Their entrance was amazing, storming the gym right after the national anthem.

Q: What’s your funniest story about a coach?

A: My coach is a pretty boring character, but I guess if I would have to choose between all of his stories about bunny and his chronically broken-down car, it would be two years ago when he had to use a cane after his hip surgery. During one of the men’s volleyball games, he got a little angry and cracked his cane in half and then continued to just sit in his chair for the remainder of the game. I think he got his message across. Thank God he had a back-up cane in his trunk.

Q: Who is your quirkiest teammate? Why?

A: Definitely [senior middle blocker] Jessica Hoffmann. I can’t even to go into detail about all of the weird stuff she does during practice, but normally if she’s off in the corner by herself or with partner in crime, [junior right side hitter] Taylor Carroll, she is bound to be doing some ridiculous exercise or talking in some weird voice, and don’t get me started on her pink drink.

Q: What has been your most embarrassing moment with the team?

A: Out of the many embarrassing moments that I’ve had over the last four years, the one that is the freshest in my head would have to be after practice, walking with some of the girls out to the Street for dinner, I foolishly followed two girls who were running to try and make the light to cross Washington [Road] in front of a bus. My sandal got caught in my sweat pants, and I pretty much face planted with both my backpack and my athletic bag flying everywhere. Two men on the other side of the street thought that the bus hit me and caused a huge scene. I still get asked every time we cross Washington after practice if someone needs to hold my hand.

Q: What’s the best part about being an athlete on campus?

A: Per diem on road trips. It fuels my shopping habit that I can’t exactly afford on my own.

A: I would have to say midterms; being a fall sport it’s the only time where I feel really overwhelmed by both school work and volleyball, and we’re dry during Princeton Halloween, which is also heartbreaking.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do when not practicing?

A: Probably dancing on the TI dance floor with the rest of my team; they’re maniacs.

Q: If not volleyball, what other sport would you would play?

A: I would probably be a swimmer or maybe [do] fencing.

Q: If you were a coach for a day, you would…?

A: Get a round of golf in before practice, and then I would fill up my purple chiller with Diet Coke and watch my team do the same five drills they always do and heckle them from my chair. Maybe I would get up and try and do a touchdown celebration dance.

Q: What has been your favorite class at Princeton? Why?

A: History 383: [The United States since 1920] with Professor Kruse. He’s a great lecturer, and I love how he started every lecture with a new song from its respective time period.

Q: Who gets the most guys on the team? Who has the most game off the field?

A: It’s a close call between [senior outside hitter] Parker [Henritze] and Hoffmann. Parker’s definitely got the late-night game in the dark corners of the TI dance floor, but Jessica takes her beaus to these mysterious places that I hear are pretty romantic. They are both pretty vague about their conquests, but the team always ends up finding out somehow.

Q: Do you have a pre-game ritual?

A: I do my nails. I try and stick with the standard colors of black or orange, but I’ve started to travel outside my comfort zone with some navy blue and purple hues. If I’m feeling really ambitious, I’ll give myself a pedicure.

Q: What is the most embarrassing song on your iPod?

A: Hmmm, although I do have an entire Disney song playlist, I would have to go with “MMMBop” by Hanson. It gets me fired up no matter what mood I’m in.
