Jackson first in grueling triathalon

Former women’s hockey player Heather Jackson ’06 won the 18-24 division of the 2008 Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii on Oct. 11.

Jackson was a two-time captain of the hockey team, leading Princeton to its first NCAA tournament appearance during her senior season.

In 126 career games, Jackson recorded 89 points on 30 goals and 59 assists, including 30 points in the 2005-06 campaign.

Jackson began training for triathlons while still at Princeton. After graduating, Jackson competed in two triathlons abroad — one in Thailand and one in Malaysia — and one in Lake Placid.

The 2006 graduate placed 10th in her age group at the 2007 World Championship before qualifying again for the 2008 event in Kona.

Senior midfielder Holly McGarvie — one of just seven college players on the roster — and assistant coaches Amy Altig and Michele DeJuliis were selected to the training team. A 48-player pool was narrowed to a 24-member team after the US Lacrosse Stars & Stripes weekend in Syracuse earlier this month.

The training team will meet in December to prepare for the US Lacrosse Champions Challenge in Florida at the end of January, where it will be joined by the other 24 players from the 48-player pool.

The results of that event will determine the 18 players and six alternates who will go on to represent the United States at the 2009 World Cup in Prague on June 17-29. The U.S. team has won five World Cups but placed second to Australia in the last World Cup, held in 2005.
