Princeton produces more pros

Savage, a three-year starter on the men’s basketball team, will spend next season as a member of SAM Massagno Basket in the Swiss National “A” League. The six-foot, six-inch, 225-pound forward was the only Tiger to start all 29 games last season, averaging 10 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

Utilizing a smooth jump shot and quick feet, Savage scored a team-high 290 points as a captain in 2008 — including 35 in a dramatic loss to Brown — and finished with a career-high 91 rebounds. Born and raised in Princeton, Savage finished his career with 876 points, 254 rebounds and 102 assists.

“Noah made the most of his time with us this past season and played with a lot of confidence in our offense,” head coach Sydney Johnson ’97 said. “He loves to play the game, and I know that the European game will suit him well. I’m very proud of him and couldn’t be happier.”

Westgarth, a defenseman who played four seasons with the men’s hockey team, recently signed a deal with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. He will most likely join former teammate Mike Moore ’08 as a member of the Sharks’ affiliate in Worcester, Mass.

A native of Amherstburg, Ontario, Westgarth played in all 31 games as a senior in 2007, notching three goals and eight assists. The 6’2”, 215-pound blueliner registered 24 career points in 114 games for the Tigers but was better known for his work in areas that statistics cannot measure. A ferocious worker and tremendous defender, Westgarth’s will be well-suited for the NHL’s physical play.

Following his career as a Tiger, Westgarth played in both the American Hockey League (AHL) and the International Hockey League (IHL). With the Iowa Chops of the AHL, Westgarth tallied five points in 37 games. Last season, in 27 games with the Flint Generals (IHL), Westgarth posted two goals and 10 assists.

Westgarth joins a long list of former Princeton hockey players in the pros, including Team USA captain Jeff Halpern ’99 of the Tampa Bay Lightning, George Parros ’03 of the Anaheim Ducks and Westgarth’s brother, Kevin, a forward in the Los Angeles Kings organization.
