The tournament had been slated to feature 36 holes on Saturday and 18 more on Sunday, but rain forced the cancellation of Saturday’s second round and prevented the completion of Sunday’s play. As a result, the teams’ scores reflected just a third of the scheduled golf.
“Our scores were not great, but not bad either,” junior Juan Pablo Candela said. “As a team we were very consistent, but the rains gave us some problems, and the field played very well.”
The weather did hold out long enough on Sunday for the teams to get in a few more holes of play. Mother Nature was feeling less than charitable, however, and once the rains returned, the course was deemed unplayable.
“We got off to a great start [on Sunday], and the rest of the field was struggling,” Candela said. “Unfortunately, we were unable to finish the round.”
The Tigers finished with a team score of plus 11, which placed them ninth. The University of Delaware won the competition with a cumulative score of minus one. Senior co-captain Max Schechter led the Tigers with a two-over 74 and tied for 20th in the individual competition. Siena’s Dan Abbondandolo won the tournament’s individual title with a score of minus five.
“Max is playing great,” Candela said. “He had a good year last year, and he has really built off of that. He is consistently one of the team’s top scorers and [is] a great leader.”
Candela, senior Drew Maliniak and freshman Patrick Wasserman each finished with a score of three-over 75, and junior Greg Stamas finished the Tigers’ five scores with a 77. Maliniak is also a staff writer for The Daily Princetonian.
“We are happy with the way we are playing and the direction we are heading,” Candela said. “We have some big tournaments coming up this month, including [the NCAA Pre-National tournament] at Galloway National Country Club, in Galloway, N. J. That is a great course with a lot of wind and a very talented field. Right now we are preparing for those tournaments and are excited to get back out on the course.”
The Tigers will play at the Xavier Invitational in Loveland, Ohio, on Oct. 13 and 14, and then they will head to Galloway on Oct. 24.
