Major League Baseball pitcher Ross Ohlendorf ’05 was traded from the New York Yankees franchise to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. The 2002 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Ohlendorf is known for his sinking fastball, which has reached 97 miles per hour.
Ohlendorf was traded along with three minor league prospects — rightfielder Jose Tabata and righthanded pitchers Dan McCutchen and Jeff Karstens — for outfielder Xavier Nady and lefthanded reliever Damaso Marte.
"With Karstens, McCutchen and Ohlendorf, we were able to add three quality starting pitchers to our system,” Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington said at the announcement.
The righthander has made 25 appearances for the Yankees this season and was optioned to their AAA affiliate June 27. Since that move, Ohlendorf has started five games out of the Scranton-Wilkes Barre bullpen, going 1-1 with a 4.03 ERA and 25 strikeouts. In 2007 Ohlendorf appeared in six games with the Yankees, accumulating an 0-0 record with a 2.81 ERA and nine strikeouts.
