The softball team will travel to the University of Massachusetts - Amherst for its first game in the NCAA tournament, the NCAA announced last night. Princeton will take on the UMass Minutewomen on Friday.
The other two teams in the Tigers’ region are Lehigh and No. 12 Stanford. The format is double-elimination, and the winner will advance to the Super Regionals to be held over Memorial Day Weekend.
Should Princeton win its game against UMass, it will play the winner of the Stanford-Lehigh game on Saturday. Conversely, if the Tigers lose, they play the loser of the other match for a chance to remain in the tournament.
The Tigers were drubbed 10-0 by Stanford at the Stanford Invitational over spring break, but since then Princeton has finished the season with 18-2 Ivy League record and an Ivy Championsip Series win over Harvard. The Tigers faced Lehigh more recently, falling 3-1 in an away match. The team has not played UMass this season.
Princeton will be led by sophomore pitcher Jamie Lettire, who was recently named Ivy League Co-Player of the Year after belting a league-best 14 home runs and batting .455 in Ivy contests. Senior pitcher Kristen Schaus was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Year for her record-setting performances. The duo is joined on the All-Ivy first team by junior infielder Kathryn Welch and sophomore outfielder Kelsey Quist.
