Aboff’s opening 65 sets scoring record

The men’s team relied on consistent play from numerous players. Over the course of the season, four golfers — freshman Evan Harmeling junior Max Schechter, junior Drew Maliniak, who is also a staff writer for the Daily Princetonian, and sophomore Juan Pablo Candela — each finished a tournament as the top Tiger.

A highlight of the spring season was the teamís second-place finish at the Princeton Invitational. Led by Schechter’s first-round 67, the team finished only four strokes behind St. John’s University. The Tigers defeated all three Ivy opponents at the tournament, finishing with double-digit leads over Penn, Columbia and Cornell. Maliniak and Candela finished in the top 10, with Harmeling only a stroke behind in a tie for 13th place.

By the end of the season, the team had improved on many of its results from 2006-07. And given that the well-balanced group will return all four of its top finishers from this season, it’s likely that it will continue to improve next year.

The women’s team — led by superstar junior Susannah Aboff — also had a solid season. The team was crowned champion at the Princeton, Nittany Lion and Hoya invitationals. Along the way, the team finished as runner-up at the Johnie Imes Invitational and the Shamrock Collegiate.

Aboff — a three-time all-league selection — was nothing short of dominant this season, winning the individual titles at the Princeton Invitational, the Shamrock Intercollegiate, the Hoya Invitational and the Ivy League Championship. The Ivy League Championship was particularly notable, as Aboff also led the team to a third-place finish.

And after finishing sixth and third individually in her freshman and sophomore years, it seemed as though Aboff was destined to win the individual title this year. Her opening round 65 set a scoring record at the Ivy League Championship, and her 11-shot victory was reminiscent of Tiger Woods’ performance at the 2000 British Open, in which he raced to a first-round lead before winning the tournament by a dozen strokes.

Her performance was enough to earn her a spot in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd,” in which SI noted her single-round scoring record as well as her overwhelming margin of victory.

Like the men’s team, the women’s team is poised to improve next season. Aboff will return hoping to continue her blistering pace, and all five of her teammates will also return with hopes of additional team titles.
