Freshman epeeist Graham Wicas took the bronze medal at the NCAA fencing championships this past weekend. After earning the top seed in a four-man bracket to determine medalists, Wicas fell 15-11 to Penn State’s Arthur Urman. Wicas bounced back, however, and won his consolation match to take the bronze. The finish matched Ben Solomon ’06’s third-place outing during his senior year.
Fellow epeeist senior Tommi Hurme placed seventh at NCAAs, earning him All-America honors for the first time in his career. Wicas was also named an All-American.
Freshman John Stogin was 20th in the sabre competition, winning eight of his bouts, while sophomore foilist Clayton Flanders took 24th. In the women’s sabre, freshman Lyuba Docheva took 20th with six victories, and in epee, junior Jasjit Bhinder finished 11th in a 24-man field.
Overall, the Tigers had 59 individual wins at NCAAs and matched last year’s performance by taking 10th place of 24 schools that had a fencer claim a victory.
