Loss to De Paul fuels commanding win over Buffalo

Both matches were played in Jadwin Gym and featured solid play from the top of the Princeton lineup. Sophomore No. 1 Melissa Saiontz rebounded from a shaky second set to best De Paul’s Dunja Antunovic 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 and followed up this win with a 6-4, 6-0 thrashing of Buffalo’s Andreea Novaceanu. At No. 2, senior Ivana King won both her matches in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, and 7-5, 6-3.

In the middle of the singles lineup, Tigers sophomore Sarah Huah and freshman Rebecca Parks  struggled to convert down the stretch and lost three matches that went to close third sets. Parks lost the first sets of both her matches 6-4 before rebounding in the second sets, only to fall 6-4 in the third sets. Huah was overwhelmed in her match versus De Paul, winning only three games in a 6-1, 6-2 defeat. She showed significant improvement against De Paul, battling hard before falling in a close tiebreaker.

The difference makers for the Tigers were certainly the bottom of the lineup and the doubles contests, where the Orange and Black struggled to a 2-3 record during its Saturday loss but went a commanding 4-1 during its win Sunday.

Freshman Sarah Hoffman managed to win both of her singles matches on the weekend, while classmate Taylor Marable went 1-1 on the weekend.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of King and Parks won its matches handily, 8-3 and 8-4.

At No. 2, Marable and Saiontz dropped a nailbiter Saturday 9-8 (5) but managed to win a close (8-6) match Sunday.

The No. 3 team of Hoffman and junior Kristen Scott never quite found its groove this weekend, losing 8-4 and 8-5 in its two matches.

Looking ahead to next weekend, the Tigers will face national powerhouse Duke as well as Northwestern and North Carolina State.
