Q: Welcome to college moment?
A: Going on OA and being too busy bonding with my future roommate to notice the huge boulder that ended up tipping our canoe, which was of course the one with all the tents. It just set the tone: dare to have fun and your GPA capsizes.
Q: Greatest highlight in sports career?
A: Winning the pole vault in outdoor Heps completely unexpectedly as a freshman and getting a PR.
Q: Funniest story about a coach?
A: I personally enjoyed Coach Ed [Roskiewicz] grabbing the microphone on the tour bus in China and serenading us ... any time he does that, it’s ... a highlight.
Q: Quirkiest teammate? Why?
A: That has to go to Aundeah for her tradition of never splitting poles when she’s walking next to someone, or else she might get hit by a car. And for her unconditional love of Quiznos, which I share.
Q: Most embarrassing moment?
A: Being afraid of guns all the time and jumping really obviously whenever they go off near me. Or accidentally grabbing the wrong pole at Heps last year.
Q: Best part of being an athlete on campus?
A: Meal money! And having a non-academic way to succeed if school’s feeling too ridiculously demanding.
Q: Favorite thing to do when not practicing?
A: Have impromptu dance parties, obviously.
Q: Other sport you’d play?
A: Volleyball.
Q: If you were a coach for a day, you would…?
A: Initiate weekly massages, like the boys have. And also make everyone switch events for a day so they can see how impressive their teammates all are and laugh at each other.
Q: Who would you say has the most off-field game among your teammates?
A: I think we’re one of the hottest teams on campus, so we’d have to have a competition to figure it out. But obviously the fielders have the most game.
Q: Do you have a pre-race ritual?
A: Having some cheez-its, or lately, peanut M&Ms.
Q: Most inspiring music?
A: “Harder Better Faster Stronger,” by Daft Punk.
Q: Most embarrassing song on your iPod?
A: Not so much any specific song, just the embarrassingly large amount of Backstreet Boys.
