Beginning a crucial six-game road trip, the women's hockey team will seek to take advantage of this weekend's games to get back into contention in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League (ECACHL).
Sitting in eighth place in the 12-team league, the Tigers (4-6-2 overall, 2-4-1 ECACHL) take on conference opponents Colgate (4-7-1, 3-1-0 ) and Cornell (5-4-1, 2-1-1) this weekend, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y., to face the Raiders tonight before moving on to Ithaca, N.Y., for tomorrow's contest against the Big Red. A pair of wins against the two Empire State squads would likely vault Princeton into the ECACHL's upper half.
Tonight's opponent, Colgate, comes into the game riding the high of a 7-3 win over Wayne State. The Raiders are led by forward Sam Hunt, who has seven goals and five assists this season. Princeton performed well against Colgate in the teams' last meeting on Nov. 17, shutting the Raiders out for a 3-0 win.
The Tigers had far less success in their previous meeting with tomorrow's opponent, Cornell. The day before Princeton blanked the Raiders, the Tigers suffered a sloppy 7-4 loss to the Big Red, allowing six goals in the span of six minutes. Princeton will look to avenge that stunning defeat this weekend.
Cornell is led by two freshman forwards, Rebecca Johnston and Karlee Overguard, who have notched 14 and 13 points on the season, respectively.
Leading the Tigers on offense is senior forward Marykate Oakley, who has three goals and 10 assists. Freshman Sasha Sherry is performing well on defense and as a playmaker, with one goal and 10 assists for 11 points overall. Princeton is backed in goal by junior netminder Kristen Young, who has 294 saves on the season while allowing an average of 2.39 goals per game.
The Tigers are coming off two losses, 3-1 and 1-0, to No. 7 Mercyhurst last weekend. The losses dropped Princeton's season and conference records under the .500 mark.
It has been a season of ups and downs for the Tigers, the team who peaked with a 2-1 nail-biter victory over No. 1 New Hampshire on Nov. 11. In a result that has been characteristic of the team's season, however, Princeton followed its tremendous upset with the frustrating loss to Cornell five days later. The Tigers have not been able to gather enough momentum to sustain a winning streak of more than two games all season.
This weekend's games are the beginning of a long road trip, as Princeton will not play another home game until 2008, against Yale on Jan. 11.
This road trip — during which the Tigers will play Union, Rensselaer and Connecticut in addition to the Raiders and Big Red — will have a significant impact on Princeton's standing in the ECACHL, as every team but Connecticut plays within the conference.
It is important to note that each of the Tigers' upcoming ECACHL opponents has a sub-.500 record on the season, meaning these games are ones the Tigers have a better chance of snapping up to move up in the standings.
