University graduate students and undergraduates over 21 years old crowded into the D-Bar last Thursday night to celebrate the reopening of the club. It was the first time in eight months that the bar had opened its doors to patrons.
"We had an excellent turnout on Thursday," D-Bar co-czar Michael Volpato GS said. "It was very exciting."
The D-Bar, or Debasement Bar, had been closed for renovations of the Graduate College basement, where it is located and from which it takes its name. Improvements included waterproofing of the walls and floors and the addition of handicap access. (Read a review of the D-bar.)
D-Bar customers said they were pleased with the recent changes. "Before, it felt like everything was just painted over — it was a basement with layers of paint on the wall," Jeffrey Dwoskin GS said. "With the renovations, it retained its old character, while becoming a lot more pleasant."
As a nonprofit, student-run club, the D-Bar provides a central gathering place for graduate students to relax, drink and socialize alongside their peers each night from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
"I go to the D-Bar with my friends to have fun together," Dwoskin said.
Residents of the Graduate College and its annexes are automatically made members of the D-Bar, while graduate students living in other buildings may become members of the D-Bar for a small fee.
Because the D-Bar is legally defined as a club and faces restrictions due to its liquor license, undergraduate students, University staff and other non-grad students must be signed in by a member to be allowed into the bar.
Still, a handful of undergraduate students attended the D-Bar's reopening, including former USG president Alex Lenahan '07. "[Going to the D-Bar] was on my list of things to do before I graduate," Lenahan said. "I had a good time."
Nevertheless, Lenahan said he does not plan to make the D-Bar his main social outlet during his final semester at the University.
"It was fun, and I might go back to the D-Bar at some point," he said. "But for now I'll probably stay with the eating clubs and doing other activities on campus."
With or without undergraduate guests, the D-Bar czars are already planning events for the club now that its doors are back open.
Frequent attractions will include live music and local DJs, and the bar will host monthly events including Karaoke Night and Quiz Night. The latter consists of six rounds of trivia competition.
