Crimson's 25 dual-meet streak snapped

After remaining undefeated for 25 straight dual meets, the Harvard women's swim team (5-1 overall, 5-0 Ivy League) was brought down by Rutgers (6-0, 3-0 Big East), dropping a Jan. 5 matchup, 169-129. The meet took on special significance as the Crimson barely topped Rutgers last year, winning that dual meet by one point. This year, the Scarlet Knights made sure they had the last laugh at their home pool.

Rutgers started off the meet with a bang, taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay. Harvard retaliated in the 1,000-yard freestyle, with freshman Alexandra Clarke and senior Stacy Blondin taking first and second.

Rutgers went on to take first in the next three events, including first- and second-place finishes in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Harvard did record some impressive individual results against Rutgers, including Samantha Papadakis' first-place finishes in the one-meter and three-meter diving events.

The fate of the meet was sealed, however, when the Knights took first through fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle and followed up with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Crimson will face New Hampshire before it travels to Princeton for the annual Harvard-Yale-Princeton showdown.

The Yale men's squash team (5-0, 1-0 Ivy League) continued its winning streak this past weekend, topping Ivy League rival Dartmouth (6-3, 0-2). The match marked the Elis' fifth-straight win and first Ivy League victory. The win was largely decided by the performances of the Elis' lower-ranked players.

Starting off strong, Dartmouth's No. 1, 2 and 4 players beat their respective Yale opponents. The Big Green's No. 1 Todd Wood and No. 4 Adam King swept their respective opponents, taking their games 3-0 and leaving little room for Yale's No. 1 Nick Chirls or No. 4 Francis Johnson to score. The Elis' lower-ranked players, however, rallied from behind to take their games.

Ho Ming Chiu, Bill Hatch and Ethan Oetter all took their games 3-0. After playing an extra set or two, Yale's Moshe Sarfaty, Colin Campbell and Todd Ruth also took their matches 3-1, 3-1 and 3-2, respectively.

Yale hopes to preserve the goose egg in its loss column when it faces Western Ontario this weekend. The Big Green will next play against Cornell.

This past weekend, the Penn women's basketball team (5-9, 1-2 Ivy League) overwhelmed Columbia (3-12, 0-2), surging past the Lions to take the home contest, 80-62. Penn's combination of solid players and high scoring percentages proved insurmountable to the Lions.

For Columbia, Danielle Brown was the leading scorer, netting 21 points. Following her lead, Megan Griffith, Brittney Carfora and Katrina Cragg tallied 13, nine and eight points, respectively. While Columbia did manage to connect on 41 percent of its attempts from three-point land, the Lions were done in by their 41 percent overall shooting rate from the floor.

Penn's top scorer, Ashley Gray, managed to match Brown's total with 21 points, and three other Quakers scored in double digits. Lauren Pears and Joey Rhoads finished with 15 points apiece, while Kelly Scott notched 13.

In the first half, the Quakers shot a solid 51.5 percent but really got going in the second half, draining 67 percent of their shots. For the game, Penn also shot 56 percent from beyond the arc.

The Lions will face Cornell this Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. The Quakers play St. Joseph's next week before taking on Brown and Yale over the weekend.
