Tigers lose two by wide margin

Continuing its season-opening losing streak, the wrestling team dropped two more contests over the weekend, the first a 36-6 defeat at the hands of Binghamton and the second a 46-0 decision to a strong Bucknell team. In the weekend's opener, sophomore Alex Enriquez and senior Kris Berr notched wins at the 165 and 285-pound levels, respectively to avoid the shutout.

The loss drops Princeton to 0-6 on the season as it heads to its home opener next weekend and its subsequent conference schedule.

Against Binghamton, junior 174-pounder John Clore came close to winning, falling 8-5 in a hard fought match, while freshman Zach Morse also barely lost at the 197-pound weight class.

Despite the goose egg against Bucknell, several Tigers put in strong performances. Sophomore Gordon Scharf narrowly lost 9-8 in the 184-pound weight class, while senior Jesse Palermo dropped at 9-6 for 149 pounds. Berr also put up another strong effort, losing 5-1 in his second match of the day.

Of the 20 individual matches on Saturday, Princeton lost by pins eight times. Enriquez, who put up the most competitive of these fights, fell after four minutes, 49 seconds against Andy Rendos of Bucknell, while freshman 133-pounder Jeff Kirchick lasted for 3:52 against the Bisons' David Marble.

While the Tigers still have yet to win a match, the two most recent matches show some promise for the future. With two strong performances, Enriquez is developing into one of the Tigers' strongest wrestlers, while Berr and Clore's experience will help on this young team.

Princeton faces Maryland in its homecoming match next Sunday.
