The 2006-07 men's basketball pre-season poll has declared that Penn is this year's team to beat. The poll, which is comprised of 16 media members from the eight Ivy League universities, registered the Quakers with 15 first-place ballots. Just behind was perennial rival Princeton, which took the sole remaining first-place vote and several second-place votes.
Though Penn has won the past two championships and is returning with 2006 Ivy League Player of the Year Ibrahim Jaaber, there is some uncertainty for the preseason favorite. After longtime coach Fran Dunphy left the Quakers to coach at Temple, Penn has brought in Glen Miller, previously the head coach at Brown.
The two preseason favorites will face off on Feb. 13 in Philadelphia.
Cornell, returning last year's Ivy League Rookie of the Year, guard Adam Gore, came in third. Below is the full list, with scores from the poll.
1. Penn, 127 2. Princeton, 105 3. Cornell, 85 4. Yale, 77 5. Columbia, 65 6. Brown, 50 7. Harvard, 36 8. Dartmouth, 31
Ivy League Wins Silver
Three Ivy League alumni received the 2007 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award this week. The award honors "former student-athletes who completed successful collegiate careers in various sports 25 years ago and went on to excel in their chosen professions." The Ivy League's recipients are Brown's Steve Jordan, Dartmouth's Gail Koziara Boudreaux and Yale's Patricia Melton. Six former student-athletes were honored in total.
Jordan, an Ivy League football standout, played 12 years of professional ball with the Minnesota Vikings. While with Minnesota, Jordan was elected to six all-pro teams. Since leaving the NFL, the former Brown Bear has excelled in the construction business and established the Steve R. Jordan Endowed Scholarship for Minority Athletes at Brown.
Boudreaux, the career scoring and rebounding leader at Dartmouth, entered business after graduation. After successfully completing Columbia Business School, Bordeaux has since become an executive at a large health care company.
Melton was named the 1982 Ivy League Player of the Year for excellence in track and field. Since leaving Yale, Melton has become a national leader in the field of education. Specifically, the former Bulldog has dedicated her efforts to developing high schools for underprivileged students.
This is only the second time three awards were given to members of the same athletic conference. The formal award ceremony will take place on Jan. 7 in Orlando, Fla.
NCAA Tourney To Arrive at Ivies
Harvard and Brown will both be hosting opening round matches of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.
Harvard, the highest-scoring team in Division I, received a bid to the tourney after claiming the Ivy League title with just one league loss. The Crimson will be facing off against Binghamton on Saturday at 1 p.m. The winner will be heading to UCLA for their second-round match.

Brown received an at-large bid to the 64-team tournament to chalk up its 22nd appearance in the national tourney. The Brown Bears will be competing with Adelphi University for a second-round slot. Last year, the Bears lost by just one goal in the opening round to the eventual tournament winner, Maryland.
