On tap with ... Brig Walker

Senior linebacker Brig Walker has been an absolute stalwart on defense this year for the Tigers. Walker has been part of the starting linebacking corps for two years and will conclude his Princeton football career this Saturday when the Tigers take on Dartmouth for a share of the Ivy League crown. He leads the team with 47 total tackles, seven of them for a loss. He has also recorded one interception on the season.

What was your "welcome-to-college-sports" moment?

When I realized that every day of freshman year fall football camp was exactly the same ridiculously long day... it felt like that Bill Murray movie "Groundhog Day".

What has been your greatest highlight in sports?

It was definitely watching the clock run out as we beat Yale this past weekend. I still haven't quite been able to fully comprehend how amazing that win was, but watching our fans charge their field in redemption for last year was pure euphoria.

Funniest story about coach?

I'd say watching [defensive backs] coach [Eric] Jackson try to recover a fumble in-stride during practice. As he reached down to pick up the ball, his loping stride ended up kicking it 15 yards away instead ... coach Jackson ... "non-athlete."

Who is your quirkiest teammate? Why?

It's a close call ... I'd even say that I have a shot, but between making regular anime references in Japanglish, sub-par — yet hysterical — trash-talking and playing the piano 24/7 in Frist, Mathey or Rocky, Cleo Kirkland is probably the most quirky.

Most embarrassing moment?

I probably wouldn't share any legitimately embarrassing moments in the 'Prince,' but as far as embarrassing sports moments go, we linebackers match up against the running backs in one-on-one drills during practice, and anytime I lose to Jamal — Cleo Kirkland's stud athlete alter-ego — I die a little bit inside.

Not to be generic and cheesy, but it's pretty incredible to have a collection of a hundred or so guys completely accountable to each other despite having all the academic, social and other extracurricular responsibilities of Princeton.

Worst/Hardest part about being an athlete on campus?

I guess being completely accountable to a sport is also the hardest part. Football isn't easy, but is absolutely worth it, so I try not to complain too much.

Favorite thing to do when not practicing?

On an average day, being able to kick back on the couch, pop in a background DVD, and chill with my roommates Tomas, 'Tonio and Greg is a nice and relaxing contrast to practice.

Other sport you would play if not football?

I'm not sure if this is a "sport", but the next "athletic" activity that I plan on doing is Capoeira ... you know, from the laser scene in Ocean's 12? It's totally sweet.

If you were a coach for a day, you would...?

Act really important by cruising campus in an open-top golf cart.

Favorite class taken at Princeton?

MOL 320: Human Genetics, Reproduction, and Public Policy with Lee Silver. It blew my mind how much advances in science can completely change the moral or legal status of life. In most of my courses, I just learned "more." This class really challenged my assumptions and made me reevaluate status quo values.

Favorite thing to do on the street?

Chill out, max/relax all cool.

What will you do with your time starting this Sunday?

Other than catch up with some school work, my immediate nonacademic plans include shaving off my massive in-season beard, tidying up some winter and intercession travel plans, joining Capoeira and playing some more drums and guitar.
