Senior and three-time all-Ivy punter Colin McDonough broke his elbow in an unspecified incident during practice this week and is listed as day-today. According to head coach Roger Hughes, privacy issues prevent the details of the injury from being released.
McDonough could be out for a few weeks, but could possibly play as soon as this Friday evening's contest against Brown.
"We don't exactly know right now," Hughes said. "He's day-today. Right now we're waiting for a couple of further assessments, and it depends on how much the swelling goes down, how well he can move the arm and a couple of other factors."
Sophomore Ryan Coyle played in McDonough's place for his first collegiate start against Colgate. Coyle punted five times, averaging 34.2 yards per punt. In the first three games this season, McDonough has averaged 42.7 yards over 12 punts.
For his career, McDonough has punted 162 times, only three behind second place all-time for Princeton punters. His career average 39.0 yards ranks second all-time.
On one particular play, Princeton was forced to punt from its own six-yard-line following a fumble. Standing at the back of his own end zone, Coyle was able to boom a 42-yard punt to the Princeton 48-yard-line, where the Tiger defense was able to stop the subsequent Colgate attack.
"The way he played Saturday was admirable, especially kicking out his own end zone," Hughes said. "We were extremely proud of him."
Hughes said that the coaching staff has faith in Coyle's ability to fill the shoes of McDonough.
"No one worked harder in the offseason than Ryan Coyle," Hughes said, "and no one really works harder during the season than Ryan Coyle. We have the utmost confidence in his abilities."
