On Tap with ... Jame Wunsch

Senior Jame Wunsch, men's soccer captain and standout defenseman, chatted with us to give some personal, down-to-earth background for such a well-accomplished player. Last year, he was named first-team All-Ivy League and second-team All-Mid Atlantic in NSCAA regional honors. Also an offensive weapon, Jame has two goals and three assists so far this season for the Tigers.

What was your "welcome to college" moment?

Probably when I got my first midterms grades back — kind of realized it was a little harder than I thought.

Greatest highlight in sports?

Getting voted captain this year. It was a real honor.

Funniest story about Coach Jim Barlow '91?

I don't know. Jim's a pretty down-to-earth guy. He's really by the books, so I'd say last year when one of our freshmen this year came on his recruiting visit. He has two older brothers who went here. Both had graduated at that time and happened to be on campus when he came on his recruiting visit, and recruits aren't supposed to talk to alumni, so Jim was pretty adamant about Matt not talking to his two brothers when he was on campus.

Quirkiest teammate? Why?

[Sophomore] Brad Fechter. I'm not really sure why. I'd just love to know what's going through his head sometimes.

Embarrassing moment?

Probably losing to Akron 5-0 my sophomore year.

Your teammates. You know you come right onto campus and immediately you have all your teammates there you know you can count on, be friends with ... we're very close this year, I mean, closer than in past years I would think even, so it's nice.

Worst/Hardest part about being an athlete on campus?

Probably missing Steak Night every Saturday at Cottage.

Favorite thing to do when not practicing?

Sleep. Probably sleep. Relax.

Other sport you would play?

Lacrosse. They seem like they get the most free stuff...Lacrosse or basketball, but I think I'd go with lacrosse.

If you were a coach for a day, you would ...?

[Run] a real hard conditioning session.

Favorite class taken at Princeton?

National Security — Jason Lyall ... it was just real, real interesting. He is a great lecturer, and it's just one of those classes that kept you interested. All the reading was relevant and, you know, you didn't mind doing [it].

Who has the most game, off the field?

I'll tell you who it's not — [freshman] Max Hare. I'm not sure he's ever talked to a girl in his life. Especially compared to his two older brothers — great game off the field. He's ... I don't know what happened to him — he's kind of the outlier in the family.

What is that crazy glass box next to Jadwin?

I don't know. It's some weird torture chamber experiment gone wrong.
