USG tables referendum reform

The USG held their final major meeting of the year last night, at which they selected the U-Council Chair and two co-Executive Committee Members for next year. These three individuals will serve on both the Council of the Princeton University Community (CPUC) Executive Committee and the Senate Executive Committee.

The Senate voted to table discussion on a potential constitutional amendment to raise the number of signatures required on a petition to prompt a student body referendum until next fall.

The USG confirmed Liz Gough '07 as U-Council Chair, and Jeremy Johnson '07 and Anna Almore '08 as co-Executive Committee members. In practice, USG President Alex Lenahan '07 explained, the U-Council Chair and the Executive Committee members all act as co-heads of the U-Council.

In previous meetings, USG members like Johnson stressed the need to raise the number of signatures required on a petition to present a referendum to the student body from its current threshold of 200. The USG voted, however, not to discuss such an amendment because members who supported such a measure did not attend last night's meeting.

USG vice president Rob Biederman '08 presented an update on the National Tuition Endowment Act, a proposed federal bill to reform the federal student loans system that the USG had considered endorsing.

"After meeting with Professor Harvey Rosen and discussing the act, I recommend that we don't sign on at this point, because there are some economic concerns," Biederman said.

"I agree with their goals of making college affordable, but at this point work still needs to be done on their proposal," he added.

Lenahan also said that he would send out a school wide email to remind students of the USG sponsored Guster concert on Dean's Date.
