A white male in his early 30s, possibly armed, stole liquor from Varsity Liquors on Monday night, according to Borough police. The suspect has not been identified.
Arun Goel, the owner of the Nassau Street liquor shop, reported that a man wearing a black raincoat entered the store during a heavy downpour at 9 p.m. Monday. The man threatened Goel with a weapon beneath his jacket, Goel said.
"He might have used his finger," Goel said. "I was scared, but nothing happened to me."
The suspect grabbed a six-pack of Smirnoff Ice and half-pint of Bacardi rum before confronting Goel, he said.
"I asked for money, and he just grabbed the stuff and took off," Goel said.
Borough police said the robber — who was unshaven, had black hair and wore a black vinyl raincoat and beige corduroy pants — escaped down Moore Street. Goel phoned police immediately after the robbery, but they could not locate the suspect upon their arrival less than four minutes later.
"[The police] have been very cooperative," Goel said. "They came in this morning with photographs but I could not identify anyone."
Detective Carol Raymond and Sergeant Christopher Quaste are in charge of the investigation, but have not identified any possible suspects.
"We haven't had any robberies lately," said Borough police Lt. Dennis McManimon. "We're going to handle this with great interest, but it's something that could take days."
Goel bought Varsity Liquors from the previous owner, Stan Rose, about 15 months ago. While the store specializes in wines, it possesses a selection of beers as well. The store originally opened in 1937 at 234 Nassau St.
"I'm disturbed. I thought this location was safe — safe community, safe neighborhood," Goel said. "I will try to strengthen my security."
