Cowher claims league honor
For the third time this season, sophomore forward Meagan Cowher was named the Ivy League Player of the Week for women's basketball. Cowher had an exceptional weekend, contributing a combined 33 points and 19 rebounds in wins against Harvard and Dartmouth.
In a 62-49 victory against the Big Green on Friday, Cowher netted 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The win was huge for the Tigers, as Dartmouth had beat them handily when they played earlier in the season at Jadwin. Cowher followed that performance by pouring in 16 points and snatching nine rebounds against Dartmouth on Saturday night.
The weekend sweep was the first time that Princeton had swept that road trip since 1979. Before their victory Friday night, the Tigers had not beaten Dartmouth on the road since 1998.
The pair of wins puts Princeton in a position where it controls its own destiny heading into the tail end of its league schedule. If the Tigers win their remaining three games against Brown, Yale and Penn, they can do no worse than tie for the league championship. That would force a playoff for the right to advance to the NCAA tournament.
Princeton hosts Brown Friday at 7 p.m. and will complete the weekend with a matchup against Yale at the same time on Saturday. Both games will be played on the Tigers' home court in Jadwin.
Water polo dominates
The women's water polo team (5-0 overall) remains undefeated after beating four Ivy League teams over the weekend. The Tigers improved their win streak to eight games, winning the Ivy League Invitational Championships in the process.
The event, hosted at DeNunzio Pool, saw No. 17 Princeton defeat Penn, 11-4, before blanking Yale, 11-0, on Friday. The Tigers then beat Dartmouth, 12-2, on Saturday to set up the championship game against Harvard. Junior Elyse Colgan scored three times for Princeton in the Tigers' 7-5 victory.
As the Crimson was the only team at the meet to play at the varsity level, Princeton's official record stands at just 5-0. The CWPA Southern season begins this weekend with games against George Washington and Bucknell.
Gaudiel earns keeper of the week award
After leading the Tigers to a two-win weekend, senior goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel won this week's award for ECAC Hockey League Goaltender of the Week. The award is the third of this season for the senior.
Gaudiel, who is now 17-5-4, blanked Yale and stopped 12 shots against Brown. In dramatic fashion, Gaudiel's shutout against the Elis on Saturday afternoon secured the Ivy League Championship for the women's ice hockey team.
