Police search for suspects in 'Wa attack

Three men assaulted an 18-year-old Hispanic man who was riding his bicycle through a commuter lot at the Dinky station last Thursday around noon, Township police said.

The victim, who was not a student, was "attacked by three black males, one in his twenties, one around ages 15-16, and the other also in his teens," Township police Cpt. Mark Emann said.

"The attackers asked him for money, at which point he threw some change their way and tried to escape quickly but was blindsided with a baseball bat," he said.

The attackers — one dressed in blue jeans and a red shirt, another in blue jeans and a black shirt — robbed the victim of his wallet and then fled, Emann said. The attackers stole $300, according to a Public Safety bulletin emailed to students.

The victim called 911 from a pay phone outside the WaWa convenience store near campus and then passed out, Emann said.

The victim was later taken to Fuld hospital in nearby Trenton, where he was released Saturday afternoon, police said.

Though the assault occurred in broad daylight in a public area, there were no known witnesses to the crime itself, Emann said. Township police are continuing to investigate.

Despite the attack, Emann said University community members are not in any heightened danger on or around campus. "We believe that this was a crime of opportunity," he said.

Police and Public Safety officials alike stressed the same points to ensure the safety of students.

"About this attack, I would say the same thing Public Safety always says about being safe: travel with other people, and be aware of your surroundings," said Duncan Harrison, Public Safety associate director.

Added Emann: "That location is generally a quiet area ... but to be safe we encourage students to travel in groups, especially late at night."

Anyone with information abut the incident should call Det. Sgt. Scott Porreca at (609) 921-2100, Emmet said. The police also maintain a confidential tip line at (609) 688-2049.
