McCareins All-American
Senior defensive back Jay McCareins was honored Friday as a member of the 2005 Walter Camp Foundation Division I-AA first team All-American.
A unanimous first team All-Ivy honoree, McCareins' defensive and special teams playmaking ability catalyzed the football team's 7-3 season.
He finished the season with nine interceptions, returning them for a total of 236 yards. Two of those returns went all the way to the end zone, helping clinch the Tigers' wins over Lafayette and San Diego.
McCareins also returned a missed field goal 100 yards for a touchdown in Princeton's season-ending rout of Dartmouth and brought a blocked extra-point attempt back 65 yards for a two-point conversion in the Tigers' victory at Penn.
And yet, despite all those feats, McCareins' biggest play of the year came in Princeton's victory against Harvard, when he returned a kickoff 93 yards late in the fourth quarter to give the Tigers a 27-24 win. It was Princeton's first victory over the Crimson since 1995.
The TIgers' last first team All-American was kicker Taylor Northrop '02 in 2001. Linebacker Zak Keasey '05 earned second-team All America honors last season.
Wrestling falls to F&M
Despite taking a 14-12 lead, the wrestling team (4-1 overall) fell to Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday in Lancaster, Pa.
A technical fall victory by senior captain Jake Butler at 197 pounds in the first match of the day gave the Tigers an early lead.
Junior 141-lb. Eric Marcotulli, senior 149-lb. Andrew Iannuzzi and sophomore 165-lb Marty Everin also notched victories.
But with the match on the line, sophomores Oliver Noteware and Logan Lowe both lost major decisions at 174 and 184-lbs., respectively, dooming Princeton to defeat.
The Tigers return to action on Friday in Dover, Del., at the Beast of the East tournament, before taking a three-week break for winter vacation.
