Sprint football visits Penn
The sprint football teams fielded by Princeton and Penn could not have enjoyed more disparate results in their respective season-opening games. While the Tigers (0-1 overall) succumbed to relentless pressure by Army and fell by a lopsided 77-0 score, the Quakers (1-0) squeezed by Cornell in a low-scoring 13-6 battle.
Despite its win, Penn could not have been overly pleased with its level of play. The Quakers were unable to score an offensive touchdown, did not complete a single pass and went one-of-16 on third down conversion tries. Meanwhile, their defense gave up 178 yards of total offense.
Still, Penn has enjoyed significant success against Princeton in the past, cruising to victories over the Tigers by scores of 48-7, 61-28, 37-15, 44-0 and 55-18 in the teams' past five meetings. The Quakers will look to continue their dominance by keeping the ball on the ground again, as Princeton could not stop the rushing plays against Army and gave up 283 yards.
Men's water polo hosts Johns Hopkins, Navy
The men's water polo team (8-2 overall) kicks off its College Water Polo Association slate with a pair of home games Saturday, hosting Navy and Johns Hopkins at DeNunzio Pool at 12 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., respectively.
The Tigers easily dispatched Johns Hopkins last weekend in the first round of the ECAC Tournament, 14-5, but the Midshipmen should prove a much tougher foe. Princeton and Navy have spent the last several years battling for CWPA Eastern Division supremacy, with the teams often splitting games each season.
On Sunday, the Tigers will travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to face Bucknell. Princeton also defeated the Bison last weekend, winning 6-5 on a sudden-death goal by senior driver John Stover in the game's fourth overtime.
M. lacrosse hires Raymond
The men's lacrosse team has hired Greg Raymond, a 2005 Johns Hopkins graduate, as an assistant coach, head coach Bill Tierney announced this week.
Tierney also announced this spring's schedule, which will feature 14 regular season games, including trips to Syracuse and Johns Hopkins and a home matchup with Virginia.
In other action...
The women's cross country team faces two of its biggest rivals Saturday, running in the annual H-Y-P meet against Harvard and Yale in New Haven, Conn. Meanwhile, the men harriers are in action in Bethlehem, Pa., in the Paul Short Invitational.
The women's volleyball team begins Ivy League play on Friday night, hosting Penn at Dillon Gym at 7:00 p.m. Last season, the Tigers were one of four co-champions of the Ivy League but lost in a postseason playoff and thus did not advance to the NCAA tournament. Princeton also plays at home Saturday night, hosting non-conference foe Juniata.

The softball team will play a bit of fall ball this weekend, traveling to the Temple Fall Invitational on Saturday and hosting a doubleheader with Rider on Sunday.
The men's and women's tennis teams continue their fall training seasons Saturday and Sunday. The men are slated to compete in the ECAC Championships in New York; the women will play in the All-American Invitational in Los Angeles.
