Men, women both take first at meet

In their opening meet of the season on Sept. 10, the Princeton men's and women's cross country teams outran their competition to finish in first place at the Fordham Cross Country Invitational.

In the women's meet, the Tigers stayed together to finish five athletes in the top 10, outpacing stiff competitor Providence, ranked No. 7 according to the NCAA 2005 preseason polls. Providence finished two runners in the top 10, good for second place while two Yale runners rounded out the top 10 to take third place. Other teams running in the Invitational were Navy, Penn, Rutgers, Fordham, SHU, St. Joseph's and SFC. Princeton is ranked No. 18 in the country as of Sept. 8.

The men's team packed together to sweep fifth through eighth place to win its meet and fend off second-place Providence. Among the men, sophomore Dave Nightengale and senior Frank Macreery finished in fifth and sixth respectively, both with a time of 25:47. Right behind them were senior Ben Stern and sophomore Justin Pines, who came in seventh and eighth at 25:48.

Overall, the women earned 32 points, 13 points more than Providence, the second-place finisher. Among the men's team, the Tigers earned 37 points, 15 points higher than Providence.

The women's squad returns to action in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 24.
