Women's open finishes season undefeated

After going undefeated in the Ivy League regular season, the women's open team had one more race to win if they were going to have a perfect season overall. On Saturday, the Tigers were able to achieve that goal of recording a flawless season with victories against UVA and USC on Lake Carnegie.

The first varsity eight won in one of its tightest races of the year, recording a time of 6:25.2. They squeaked ahead of UVA by only 2.3 seconds to claim the victory.

Princeton's other win on Saturday came from the novice boat, which finished 2.7 seconds ahead of UVA. The Tigers lost in both varsity four races and in the second varsity eight race.

Justifiably ranked No. 1 in the country, the women's varsity eight will be the team to beat in the Eastern Sprints on May 15. Even though they enter as the defending champions, Princeton will be challenged by a field of very competitive teams.

With the Eastern Sprints quickly approaching, the men's heavyweight team had only one more race to focus on before turning its attention to the Ivy League championship event. At Lake Carnegie on Saturday, the Tigers won their final regular season matchup as they claimed a victory against Brown.

Princeton's first varsity boat recorded a substantial victory. Its time of 5:41.2 was almost nine seconds ahead of Brown's first varsity eight.

The second varsity boat also had a good day, winning its race by 12 seconds with a time of 6:01.7. This was an important win for the second varsity, coming off losses to both Cornell and Yale last weekend.

The Bears had wins in the third varsity and the novice eight races. The closest race of the day was the novice race, which was decided by five-tenths of a second. The Tiger freshmen finished ahead with a time of 5:51.0.

Looking ahead toward the Eastern Sprints, the No. 4 crew will have their work cut out for them if they want to claim the Ivy League title. The first varsity boat suffered its only loss of the season to Harvard two weeks ago, which should give them motivation to knock off the defending Eastern Sprint champions and current No. 1 team.

M. lightweight loses again

Men's lightweight suffered another set of heartbreaking losses Saturday as they fell to Harvard and Yale in Cambridge, Mass. With a time of 5:59.9, Princeton finished nearly 11 seconds behind Harvard and eight and a half seconds behind Yale.

The second varsity eight came in second place on Saturday by falling to Harvard and defeating Yale. With a time of 6:03.6, the Tigers finished four seconds behind the Crimson and 2.4 seconds ahead of the Bulldogs.

Princeton was able to pull out wins in the third varsity and novice races. The third varsity finished with a time of 6:10.1, ahead of Yale by five and a half seconds. The story of this season seems to be the lightweight novice boat, however, as they have lost only one race all season — a tightly contested battle against Navy. The up-and-coming freshman eight is going to be a force to be reckoned with for the next three years in lightweight crew.

The lightweights of the Ivy League are all extremely competitive this year. With so many high caliber teams, the Eastern Sprints should provide a chance to showcase that talent.

W. lightweights still No. 1

When the Tigers and the Crimson square off, it never fails to make for a great story. Princeton was victorious in the 2003 Women's Lightweight Eastern Sprints, but last year Harvard claimed the title for itself. With Sprints just around the corner, Saturday's matchup was merely a preview for the drama of May 15.

The No. 1 Tigers came out on top in this chapter, defeating Harvard by 7.5 seconds with a time of 6:53.2 in Cambridge, Mass. Princeton also had a win in the novice eight with a time of 7:04.6. Harvard's varsity four beat both of the Tigers' varsity four boats.

Harvard and Princeton are the favorites to meet in the Eastern Sprints finals in two weeks. Ranked No. 1 this season, the Tigers will be looking to repeat their success from Saturday and reclaim the Ivy League title.
