Tigers split with Big Red, don't make ILCS

For the first time since 1995, the baseball team will not play in the Ivy League Championship Series for a shot at an NCAA tournament bid.

Needing to win three of four games against Gehrig Division foe Cornell this weekend, the Tigers (16-24 overall, 10-10 Ivy League) could only muster splits both Friday afternoon at Clarke Field and Sunday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y. With the two wins, the Big Red (17-20, 11-9) earns the Gehrig crown and the right to face the Red Rolfe division champion in the ILCS next weekend.

Friday afternoon, Cornell took game one, 5-3, scoring all five runs off sophomore hurler Gavin Fabian in the third inning. But the Tigers bounced back in game two, winning 8-3. Senior centerfielder Will Venable led the way, going 4-4 with two home runs and five runs batted in.

The Friday split meant that Princeton needed to win both games Sunday to take the Gehrig crown. The Big Red dashed the Tigers' hopes immediately, winning game one 4-3. Junior hurler Erik Stiller took the loss, only his second of the year. In the suddenly meaningless game two, Princeton jumped to a 6-0 lead, but Cornell rebounded to force extra innings. Junior catcher Zach Wendkos hit a solo home run in the top of the tenth, giving the Tigers a 7-6 win.
