Maryland edges Princeton in overtime

As Maryland's Brooke Richards emerged from behind the net and scored against senior goaltender Sarah Kolodner in the second sudden-death overtime session, the horn sounded on Princeton's regular season. The No. 4 Tigers lost an overtime thriller, 13-12, in the regular season finale against the No. 8 Terrapins in College Park, Md.

"I think we were playing like we were down," head coach Chris Sailer said of her team's latest performance. "We were able to come back and get it back and tie up the game."

The lead went back and forth in the first two overtime periods. Maryland trailed by one goal, 11-10, after freshman attack Katie Lewis-Lamonica scored her fifth goal of the game one minute, 21 seconds into the first overtime period. The Terps tied the game shortly thereafter, but sophomore midfielder Kathleen Miller put Princeton back on top by one goal, 12-11, on a free position shot at the end of the period.

Once again, however, Maryland responded, scoring 23 seconds into the second overtime. The game remained deadlocked at 12, with neither team finding the net in the first sudden death overtime until Richards scored her game-winning goal in the 69th minute to give the Terps their first win over Princeton since 2001.

Though Kolodner allowed the final goal of the game, her two huge saves kept the Tigers in the game at both the end of the regulation and the end of the first sudden death overtime. Kolodner had 12 saves in the game, including eight in the all-important second half and overtime sessions.

Maryland on top early

The Terps scored twice early in the game to take a quick 2-0 lead. Lewis-Lamonica responded midway through the half to tie the game, scoring two goals in two minutes.

With 10 minutes left in the half, Maryland took another two-goal lead, 4-2, before goals from senior attacks Ingrid Goldberg and Lindsey Biles tied the game only five minutes later. Princeton headed into the locker room with a 6-4 lead after sophomore attack Alex Gangler and Miller both scored in the final two and a half minutes of the first half.

The Terps wasted no time in striking back in the second half, however, scoring less than two minutes into the half. When the dust had settled after a whirlwind 15 minutes of second-half play, Maryland had scored six out of the first seven goals to take a 10-7 lead. Richards scored her first two goals of the game in that stretch, both of which were assisted by Kelly Jasper, and Delia Cox added her second goal of the game to cap the run.

But Lewis-Lamonica would not let the Tigers stop fighting. She scored two goals in a one-minute span to bring Princeton back to within one goal, 10-9. Sophomore midfielder Christine Dobrosky completed the three-goal comeback, finding the back of the net on a free position shot at the 6:14 mark. The 10-10 tie marked the fourth tie in the game.

The Terps simply outplayed the Tigers in the second half of the game and the overtime sessions. Maryland controlled all seven of the draws in the overtime periods and outshot Princeton 25-10 in the second half and overtime.

"[Maryland is] a great team that's capable of going on a run at any time," Sailer said.

Richards led the Terps with a hat trick and an assist. Four other Maryland players had two goals apiece.

Lewis-Lamonica led all scorers with five goals, finishing her rookie season with 26. Miller added two more, and Dobrosky tallied three points in the game with one goal and two assists.

Senior midfielder Elizabeth Pillion remained sidelined with a hamstring injury for the third straight game.

Sailer said she is hopeful that Pillion will be ready to play in the NCAA Tournament. For right now, the Tigers are waiting for her recovery as she takes it day by day.

Wednesday's loss hurts Princeton's chances at a top seed in the NCAA Tournament, even though it is still guaranteed a spot. On Sunday night, the Tigers find out who they will play in the first round of the tournament.
