St. John's crushes Tigers

After the baseball team's performance in their first night game of the season against St. John's on Tuesday night, it was clear that Princeton should stick to playing during the day. The one run the Red Storm (27-12 overall, 11-3 Big East) scored in the first was more than the Tigers (14-22, 8-8 Ivy League) could manage the entire night, as St. John's went on to score nine more and cruise to a 10-0 win at home.

That first, and game-deciding, run was unearned, as St. John's leadoff batter Joe Burke reached first on a throwing error by junior shortshop Matt Becker. After a successful sac bunt advanced him to second, Blake Hershelman brought him home on a single ripped to centerfield.

Red Storm pitcher Anthony Sullivan had no trouble with the Princeton batters, making the Tigers go three-and-out in four of the six innings he pitched and notching 10 strikeouts in the process. Princeton hurler sophomore Willis Sweney was battered early, however, as he gave up four runs in three and a third innings.

The Tigers' offensive didn't give him much support, though, as they only picked up four hits, two of which were contributed by senior leftfielder Adam Balkan.

Princeton returns to Ivy League play on Friday needing to win three of four games against Cornell in order to take the Lou Gehrig Division crown.
