'The Bus' wins gold at World Champs
Former women's hockey goalie Megan Van Beusekom '04 earned a gold medal at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Foundation Women's World Championship last week as a member of the U.S. National Team.
Van Beusekom played in each of the three round-robin games, allowing just two goals on 17 shots — a .895 save percentage — in 90 minutes of ice time. The U.S. defeated China, Germany and Finland in those contests. She did not play, however, in either of the medal round games — the U.S. beat Sweden in the semifinals and edged out Canada in the finals in a game decided by a shootout.
The tournament was Van Beusekom's first international experience.
NCAA releases assorted rule changes
The National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I Management Council released its annual rule change proposals on Tuesday, which included approving a 12th regular season game for football teams and more scholarships for female athletes.
The proposal to add a 12th game has long been hotly debated, but it passed relatively easily with only the Atlantic Coast Conference voting against it.
Several women's sports were granted additional scholarship spots, including gymnastics, soccer, track and field and volleyball.
Another proposal, which would have allowed men's and women's basketball coaches to be present at informal summer scrimmages, did not pass, but changes giving them more freedom in red-shirting players were adopted.
All the changes must be approved by the Division I Board of Directors, which meets on April 28 in Indianapolis.
