As citizens across New Jersey were evacuated because of rising waters and flash flood warnings, the lives of Princeton athletes were likewise disrupted by the monsoon that hovered over the tristate area this weekend. Four different teams — baseball, softball, track and men's crew — were forced to postpone or move their respective events because of the torrents of rain.
Baseball (5-11 overall) first pushed its doubleheaders against Yale from Saturday to Sunday as the heavy thunderstorms and poor field conditions made it impossible to compete on Clarke Field. The dismal weather conditions forced the Tigers to once again reschedule their Ivy League-opening games, this time not only moving the date one day back but also changing the location of play from Princeton to New Haven.
While the Tigers were supposed to play Brown on Monday instead, those games have been tentatively shifted to Tuesday at a site to be announced. The postponement of weekend play will affect all Ivy games.
The softball team (17-7 overall) was scheduled to open league play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Penn, but they too were forced to sit idly this weekend. The Penn games will still be at home but have been moved to April.
Instead of traveling to Temple on Sunday, that doubleheader was also called due to inclement weather. The games against the Owls have yet to be rescheduled.
Though the men's heavyweight and women's open crew regattas did not succumb to the weather like their landlocked schoolmates, they did have to move the locale of the competition. Both squads, currently ranked No. 1 in the national polls for their divisions, were supposed to row at Rutgers, but instead raced on Lake Carnegie on Saturday.
The slight change did not negatively affect Princeton's performance, however, as men's heavyweight defeated Rutgers in the Varsity eight, 2nd Varsity eight and frosh/novice divisions. Women's open came out on top of Rutgers and Columbia in Varsity eight, 2nd Varsity eight, Varsity four and Varsity four "B"/2N.
