Tigers kick off season with one win, two losses

After winning its season opener against Georgia State, 5-2, the men's tennis team lost its next two matches by a wide margin. The Tigers lost by scores of 7-0 and 6-1 to Georgia Tech and Clemson, respectively.

Although the scores weren't extremely impressive, Princeton (1-2 overall) benefited from facing tough competition early in the season.

"It was a fairly productive trip in which we competed against some of the top teams in the country," No. 4 Hans Plukas said. "Our team gained some experience as a whole by playing against some of the top southern teams."

In the Tigers match against Georgia State, Darius Craton won at No. 1 singles and doubles. He won his singles contest in a long three-set match after losing the second set, 1-6. Princeton's No. 2 and 3 players each lost to their opponents, and the rest of the Tigers won for a final tally of 5-2.

Their next two matches were not as successful. The lone point against Clemson was earned in doubles, in which Princeton won two out of the three matches. Craton and senior Josh Burman teamed to win their match, 9-7, as did the team of sophomore Ted Mabrey and freshman Aswhat Sarohia.

While the bulk of the Tigers' season comes in the spring, they also play a number of tournaments during the fall to keep in shape and prepare for the upcoming season. Princeton hosted the Farnsworth Invitational and also competed in the Yale Invitational, the ECAC Invitational, the ITA Regionals and the Big Green Invitational.

Princeton returns to action Feb. 12 and 13, hosting South Carolina State and Manhattan.
