Princeton performs well under APR index

According to data released by the NCAA yesterday, none of Princeton's varsity athletic teams are in danger of falling below new academic standards that will take effect next season.

Princeton's overall "academic progress rate," or APR, of 994 ranked in the top decile of all universities, well above the 948 national average.

Based on the 2003-04 school year, the NCAA calculated the APR for each team at all 326 Division-I universities. The index is based on a formula that evaluates student-athletes' progress toward graduation.

Starting next December, after another year of data is available, teams falling below a minimum APR score will be penalized by loss of scholarships.

A team in which every player finished the year in good academic standing and returned to school the next fall would receive a perfect 1,000 score. Meanwhile, a team with a roughly 50 percent grduation rate would receive a 925 — the minimum score necessary to avoid penalties.

More than half of all D-I schools have at least one team that received a score of less than 925, and 7.4 percent of all teams in the country fell below the cutoff.

But at Princeton, not a single team is in danger of falling below the 925 minimum. Seventeen squads earned perfect scores, with only two falling below 975 — men's and women's fencing, which earned a 971 and 952, respectively.

Director of Athletics Gary Walters '67 could not be reached to comment on Princeton's performance.
